Once upon a time I was a blogger - not about farming, and not with any large following - but I sat down at our old family computer, with dial-up internet, and I blogged. This was in the early 2000s, before influencer blogs made money and became part of mainstream culture. I was far from an influencer, though I found wonderful friends who I’m still in touch with to this day. Truthfully, I can’t even remember what I wrote about. I think I mainly chronicled the day-to-day experiences of being a teenager (yikes), and used it for sharing my photos before Instagram was born. But somewhere between high school and college, I lost touch with my blog and didn’t have time to keep it up. Heading into college, I think a part of me was also hesitant to keep a public journal of sorts, and I let it die.
As I approach 30, it feels like a return to myself to start a blog again - to write again. Back in the early days, it used to feel like such a vulnerable thing to share your writing. I suppose it still is, but when I started nobody I knew blogged or shared their life so publicly, and now we’re on our phones all day posting stories and captioning our posts, sharing slices of our world with friends and strangers. I’m realizing that people want a glimpse into our farm life, and blogging is one of the best ways for me to share that with you.
So it begins, I’m starting a farm blog! In the posts to come, I’ll be sharing my story of coming home to the farm and what it’s like to be the only child and next generation carrying the legacy of the farm forward, working with my Dad and with my partner, Tom. You’ll also get a healthy dose of cute farm animals, recipes and tips for enjoying our pastured meats, and resources on raising livestock. The last few years have been a crash course for me in returning to the land - and one that I’m still learning from every day. I’ll do my best to share the good, the not-so-good, and the real with you, as well as the practices and products that improve my life here on the farm. If you would like me to write about something specific, or have any questions for me, please leave a comment!
Thanks for reading,
-Olivia
